This book gets both the warm fuzzies and the angsty agonizing just right. And since it's Spencer Spears, there's plenty of chatty snark.I read the original version a few years ago when it was published under one of those group pen names, and I like this new version much better. Jesse is a barista at Cardigan Café by day and tends bar at the Flamingo by night in Savannah. Saving every dime from his meager pay is important to him, as this is the only way he can make his one dream in life become a reality - owning and operating his own bed-and-breakfast. One night at the bar, while discussing with his friend Brooklyn why he'd decided not to run the Savannah marathon, their conversation is interrupted by a stunning blond-haired, green-eyed bar patron who talks Jesse back in to not only running the marathon, but to allowing himself to be Jesse's personal trainer in the event. Jesse takes the man, Mark, up on his training offer. However, as the training progresses, the two find far more than just training camaraderie for each other. Mark Riordan is an ex-Army lieutenant who's come back to Savannah to help his grandmother Gigi repair and remodel her house for it to be sold. Meeting the cute but wary Jesse at the Flamingo one night is a brave feat for the ex-military, as he does not do well around crowds and loud noises. My First Time Fling is a fabulous book, full of friends, family… and a marathon race!! The plot of this book is very thoughtful, well written and entertaining. Jesse and Mark are training together for the marathon, but all the time training has caused them to enjoy being around each other more and more. With each guy's troubles in life, it seems that the other is a perfect comfort for the other's soul… that Mark helps ease Jesse's feelings of inadequacy and, in return, Jesse helps to calm and keep Mark out of his own head for awhile. Sadly, the reader realizes that each character has flaws that must be dealt with together, for the sake of their relationship. The book I felt culminated during the marathon, as Jesse is doing some real soul searching and thinking, and is surprised to find out that his answers are waiting at the finish line. An awesome book!! Highly recommended! 5 stars!! I read an advance reader's copy of this book, and am leaving my honest and unbiased opinion of it.
