This book was engaging, from start to finish. I identwith Ada, as I am a retired Women's Health Nurse Practitioner. Taking care of Women meant everything to her, and me as well. The story line was improbable at times, but still very enjoyable. The struggles of the women, and Lark, remind me of the struggles of today's LGBQT Community, and the negative effects of religious fanaticism. As a Black Ordained Minister and out, married Lesbian, I have experienced some of the same issues even today in 2021, in a country torn apart by the machinations of a delusional person bent ont destroying Democracy, and life as we know it. Reminds me of Dr. Lively...Perhaps you could write a sequel, and explore the possibility of knowledge changing the thinking of the twisted minds, and Women receiving the help that they needed, without having to become outlaws I bought this book based on the reviews and premise. The author handles action scenes well and had a genuine feel for her western environment and the genre. However, given that the book commences based on a series of events in this western dystopia, I would have wanted and expected more world building and emphasis on the new post-flu world. I felt the characterization was lacking and it was hard to distinguish the gang members from each other. The resurgence of miscegenation theories was handled superficially. I would actually, despite this review, be interested in a sequel, provided the worldbuilding and characters were more fleshed out. I just didn't "cotton" to the non-binary world the author created as much as the possibilities in an old West dystopia.
